The following step shows how hand water pump works:

  1. As you pull down the handle of the pump, the piston of cylinder moves upwards.
  2. This creates a region of low pressure inside the cylinder.
  3. Because of the low pressure, water from the ground or the reservoir is pulled up into the cylinder through a one-way valve so that the pressure inside the cylinder becomes equal to the outside pressure.

4. When you pull the handle up, the water from the piston moves down.

5. It causes the water to move through the 2nd one-way valve and the water finally comes out of the spout.

6. Every time you move the handle up and down, more water is pulled up from the ground and it comes out of the spout.
